Beam Clean & Restore use a soda blasting and low-pressure chemical-free blasting method to safely, effectively remove and strip paint, varnish, smoke damage, graffiti and grime from timber & oak beams.
Soda blasting and low-pressure chemical-free blasting are non-harmful processes to clean and strip wooden beams and timbers. Soda blasting uses sodium bicarbonate and as baking soda is an extremely friable material it completely fragments on impact cleaning and stripping the timbers and beams without any surface damage.
In almost all cases, Heritage sites have stringent and specific restrictions on the kinds of cleaning methods that can be used on them, often out of necessity due to the various types of precious stone involved in their construction. Old stone is a particularly common challenge.
With more than 25 years experience in working at Heritage and historic sites, our operatives know that every building will have its own characteristics which require an in-depth understanding of the types of stone being treated as well as the history of the building itself. The exact cleaning methods we use will always be determined by a detailed assessment before any work is carried out.
During cleaning we may use physical methods such as brushing, rubbing, washing, and steaming to remove harmful acidic dirt which can cause reactions with carbonate particles in some types of older stone. In some circumstances, we will use safe chemical cleaning methods or organic solvents to clean stone and remove harmful pollutants.

We can also provide graffiti removal for a historic site, such as buildings or structures that are of local, regional, or national significance. Rest assured that we use dust sheets, extractors, and dust management procedures where needed – all of which are standard practice for on-site blast cleaning projects. Following offsite projects, we do clean up to the best of our ability, but dust will settle overnight. This dust will therefore need to be vacuumed/wiped away the following day. Soda can be disposed of in normal drains or in normal waste and skips. We request that a skip be provided for offsite projects.
Soda blasting has two main uses that both benefit from its mildly abrasive cleaning properties: automotive restoration and property maintenance. One of soda’s main benefits in terms of automotive uses is that it does not cause the surface to heat up – making it essential for cleaning large, flat vehicle components (such as bonnets and roofs), and those made of aluminium or carbon fibre; both potentially at risk of heat warping.
